We had just read “How much land does a man need”, and we were talking about how it’s an allegory.
And everyone interpreted the story in a stupid way.
Teacher: “What’s the point of the story”
Student: “Greed is bad”
EVERYONE KNOWS GREED IS BAD, YOU FUCKING DOLT. THIS IS AN OBVIOUS CRITIQUE OF CAPITALISM.
Teacher: “What does the Devil symbolize?”
Student: “Temptation, like in the Garden of Eden, except instead of fruit, the devil uses land to tempt Pahem”
NO FUCK YOU. THE DEVIL REPRESENT THE FLAWS OF LOCKEAN PROPERTY AND CAPITALISM.
Teacher: “What does the tribe and its method of selling land represent”
Student: “The devil and temptation”
NO NO NO NO. YOU SHITASSBITCH YOU ARE WRONG.
But because I’m a spineless fuck I decided to not get into an argument with my english teacher and the other students in my class.
Tolstoy was a socialist and was critiquing capitalism. Don’t turn this into some Biblical shit and a lame thing about ‘greed’. You’re just wrong.
This happens to me all the time in English and Philosophy.

To be fair he was a Christian anarchist, so his critiques of capitalism would stem from his interpretations of the bible.
